BIPOC Speaker Series
Created with the intent to highlight BIPOC information science workers, the BIPOC Speaker series will provide additional and timely professional development opportunities for our membership. Members of the BIPOC Caucus are invited to participate in conversation with each speaker in anticipation of the member-wide events.
The BIPOC Speaker Series is an initiative of the BLC's Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Community of Interest with support from the Innovation Fund.

Diversity and Collection Development: Every selector's responsibility
As colleges and universities develop and/or refine their equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) plans, departments and other units across those institutions are asked to demonstrate support for these plans. The library's collections are a tangible way to show support for this work and highlight how we can make significant progress in this area now while other measures of EDI progress are slow at best.
This session will discuss how and why the development of collections for diversity can be approached and is the work of all with selection responsibilities in our libraries.
Courtney L. Young is University Librarian at Colgate University. She graduated with a BA from The College of Wooster and earned a MS in Library Science from Simmons College (now University). Before coming to Colgate, she held library positions at Penn State University, Michigan State University, and The Ohio State University. Courtney has served in a variety of leadership roles in the American Library Association (ALA), including being elected the 2014-2015 ALA President. She is a recipient of the Simmons Alumni Achievement Award for Outstanding Achievement and Excellence in Library and Information Professional Endeavors. Courtney frequently presents and publishes on issues related to advocacy, academic librarianship, diversity, leadership, and professional development.

Exploring Power Within Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
This webinar will discuss how power structures and impacts our work in diversity, equity, and inclusion. We will explore power dynamics and how they feed into our collective and individual responsibility in creating racially just work environments. Participants will also have an opportunity to build their own action steps towards improving organizational culture.
Sofia Leung is a first-generation Chinese American librarian, facilitator, and educator and the principal of Do Better, Be Better LLC. Her work employs Critical Race Theory and Emergent Strategy principles. Sofia is a founding editor at up//root: a we here publication, and a facilitator for the Association of College and Research Libraries Information Literacy Immersion Program. She is the co-editor of Knowledge Justice: Disrupting Library and Information Studies Through Critical Race Theory (MIT Press). She holds a Master’s in Library and Information Science and a Master’s in Public Administration, both from the University of Washington in Seattle, and her B.A. in English from Barnard College.
