BLC is hiring a Project Archives Assistant!

The Boston Library Consortium's 50th anniversary is fast approaching. In 2020, the Consortium will celebrate half a century of collaboration and resource sharing.  To help mark the occassion, the BLC has set funds aside to hire a Project Archives Assistant to organize its records. The BLC is grateful to staff at the University of Massachusetts, Boston's Archives and Special Collections Department, as well as members of the Special Collections COI for their assistance in supervising and vetting candidates for this position.

Position: Project Archives Assistant

Anticipated Start Date: August or September 2019

Department: University Archives and Special Collections, Healey Library

Location: University of Massachusetts Boston, 100 Morrissey Blvd., Boston, MA 02125

Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Interim University Archivist and Curator of Special Collections, the Project Archives Assistant will appraise and describe the records of the Boston Library Consortium (BLC). The Archives Assistant will develop a processing plan for the collection, including recommendations for document housing and storage, and will fully process and create a finding aid for the materials. As part of this work, the Archives Assistant will identify historical materials that highlight the work of the BLC over the last fifty years with the goal of creating a digital timeline or exhibit at a later time. As part of this work, the Archives Assistant will acquire significant hands on experience with all levels of the archival process and will have the opportunity to collaborate with staff at UMass Boston, the BLC, as well as other archives and special collections departments affiliated with the BLC.

Qualifications

Required:

  • MLS or equivalent, or current enrollment in a graduate library science program
  • Excellent oral and written communication, organization, technology, and problem-solving skills

Preferred:

  • Experience and/or interest in working with archives/special collections/institutional records
  • Experience and/or interest in working with technology

 

Hourly rate: $15.00/hour

Hours/week: 10 - 15  hours per week

Days and times needed: Hours are flexible but must be scheduled in at least 2 hour blocks and arranged with Healey Library staff; hours must occur Mon - Fri 9:00 am - 4:30 pm.

Position length: Four months
