Our third Digital Lenders Forum will explore the role of external advocacy in advancing digital lending initiatives with partners outside of the library itself. Liaising and collaborating with publishers, software developers, technology vendors, lawyers, legislators, and other external stakeholders often requires library workers to master the art of “translation” in navigating the various vernaculars that define each sector. This panel conversation will explore how library advocates can better understand the goals and motivations of external partners, translate their library’s needs into messages that resonate across different audiences, and how to develop your personal advocacy toolkit to help bridge our competing and shared interests. Panelists will offer strategies for navigating external partnerships and empower attendees to strengthen their collective advocacy work for digital lending in libraries.

Panelists
Beth Denker is currently the Collections and Content Management Librarian at the University of Denver. She has over 10 years of experience in library collections, negotiations, and licensing. Her research interests include traditional library rights for non-traditional resources, and advocacy for libraries in negotiations and licensing with publishers. Previous to her work at DU, Beth worked at the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries and the Regis University Dayton Memorial Library. Prior to getting her MLS from Emporia State University and joining the library world, Denker worked in corporate accounting for 11 years. Denker also has a MM in Voice Performance from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities but has mostly retired from professional performing and teaching. Away from work, Denker enjoys spending time with her spouse, her dog, and her friends. She loves reading, travel, and learning new things, the most recent of which is drywall mudding.
James Robinson has spent his 10+ years in libraries helping resource sharing communities join forces and pool resources and information together for the common good. He works with library staff to create governance and operations frameworks that allow them to successfully collaborate with each other. He currently supports ReCAP's BorrowDirect resource sharing service and serves as a co-convener on Project ReShare's Product Committee. When he's not working, you can lure James out from hiding by recommending a restaurant he and his wife should try, talking about board games, or asking to see pictures of his two dogs, Meep and Willow.
Juliya Ziskina is an international law and public interest copyright attorney and a Policy Fellow with the eBook Study Group, a coalition promoting equitable terms and fair pricing for library ebooks. She was previously a Policy Fellow with Library Futures, where she wrote policy papers on model ebook state legislation and library digital ownership. When she was a law student at the University of Washington, she co-founded and led a successful initiative for an institutional open access policy at UW.
