On college campuses everywhere, librarians are frequently turned to as "the solution" to misinformation. Yet, what can librarians do when their only interaction with many students are one-shots? Dr. Kirsten Hostetler, Senior Research Analyst at Project Information Literacy (PIL), will join BLC member, Kari Mofford, Health Sciences and Engineering Librarian at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, to discuss librarians’ responsibilities for teaching information literacy competencies through one-shots when many are hesitant to accept the title of teacher.
An instructional design and technology scholar, Kirsten will discuss takeaways from PIL’s 2016 research report on lifelong learning, Staying smart: How today’s graduates continue to learn once they complete college, as well as findings from her own research on student engagement, cognitive load, and of the limitations of one-shots.
This session includes time for a Q&A with librarians, faculty, and staff to share ideas about strategies for emphasizing student agency without compromising information literacy and assignment outcomes.

About PIL’s Virtual Chats
Since 2021, PIL has offered hour-long virtual chats to different institutions in the U.S. and Canada with PIL researchers as a way to foster discussion and share ideas around improving teaching and learning while suggesting new avenues for inquiry and experimentation. Conversations are tailored to each institution’s interests and the issues relevant to their challenges. No slides are used in PIL’s chats, in order to encourage in-depth conversation and sharing of strategies. A recording of the session will be made available for the purpose of being livecast, stored, and viewed asynchronously by the BLC community.
