Please join us for an interactive workshop on fair use! Questions about fair use – a part of the copyright law that allows for using copyrighted materials in certain circumstances without seeking permission - come up in a variety of situations in our work in libraries.
This workshop will provide an introduction to copyright & fair use and then focus on the practical aspects of doing, and guiding patrons through, a fair use analysis by looking at real-life use cases from a BLC member institution.
Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss cases with colleagues from across the BLC and to consider implications for practices & workflows. The case studies discussed will originate in access services & resource sharing contexts, but all attendees will gain more experience performing fair use analyses and we invite attendees from all backgrounds & levels of experience with copyright to attend.
Learning objectives: By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe the relationship between fair use and copyright
- Identify situations appropriate for a fair use analysis
- Support patrons in a fair use analysis
- Recognize activities in line with fair use
Please note space is limited to 40 participants.
